The enlargement of the prostate gland in men is a natural occurrence of
aging. As all men get over the age of 40, the prostate begins to enlarge and,
as such, can cause a variety of symptoms. In some men the enlargement of the
prostate may never cause a problem whatsoever. In other men, however, it
causes a change in their voiding habit. As one gets older, one may see a
change in the number of times the individual needs to urinate throughout the
day. He may need to get up multiple times during the night. He may have a
marked decrease in strength and caliber of the urinary stream. These
individuals may also see an increase in dribbling or dripping at the end of
the urination and a sensation of not completely emptying the bladder. These
are the most common symptoms and are also found alone or in combination
In the past if these problems occurred, if it resulted
in a trip to a physician, treatment, if necessary, would be surgical. Prostate
surgery in the past was fraught with many complications and a low success
rate. As such, men were afraid to go to the urologist for the "roto
rooter job." Up until recently, prostate surgery often resulted in
bleeding requiring transfusion, urinary infection, loss of urinary control
(incontinence), or the loss of erection (impotence). Those days, however, are
gladly over.
